Gravy Time!

Gravy Time!

Making gravy is easy, I mean really easy. With just a few ingredients we can make a basic gravy. You don’t need to  buy that stuff in a packet, or a jar.

So to make 1 cup of gravy this is what we will need.

1 Bullion cube (chicken or beef most common)
1-1/4 cups cold water
2 tbs of Corn Starch

Really, that’s it.  If you have never made gravy it’s good to start with just the basics before modifying things.

Let’s get started with boiling 1 cup of water with 1 bullion cube. A bullion cube is about 1 teaspoon in size if your using a powdered bullion.

It will take a while for the bullion cube to dissolve, and some of the water will evaporate but that’s ok. So lets mix up our Corn Starch now to get it ready.

Mix 2 Tablespoons of Corn Starch with 1/4 of cold water. You can add an ice cube or two to get it cold.

Once your bullion cube has dissolved and your water is boiling it’s time to pour in your corn starch.

Now use your whisk to mix it up. It will thicken quickly and be ready.

Now that you have seen how easy it is, you can experiment with adding spices, pepper is highly recommend.  Instead of using a bullion cube, real broth is prefered. Using pan drippings along with water you can make turkey, chicken, pork, and beef gravy.  These are all considered in the “brown” gravy family.  Now that you know how to use corn starch to make gravy you can also use it to thicken soups.
