Split a large log by hand

Split a large log by hand

When you can't move it, it's a problem.

So when the log is too heavy for you to move, there is only one thing to do, make it lighter. The problem is that swinging and axe on something like this is going to wear you out.  So we have to think smarter.

To start I find the natural crack already in the wood and attempt to use it to help. Place your wedge into the side (I used my hatchet ) and begin to tap it in.  You can experiment with the weight of the hammer and type of wedge you use. I found that a lighter hammer worked well for me, saving my arm for later when the real splitting would begin.

I have a nice split but it moved to the side. Not a big deal, but we will make another one.

It’s so much easier to lift and split now – yeah!
